Polka Dot Tights

I don't know about you but I am so tired of endless months of plain black opaque tights. I'm not giving up on them entirely but I'm finding myself more and more drawn to sheers, especially as the calendar (if not the weather) is moving into Spring. My pasty pallor doesn't lend itself well to bare legs so sheer tights are the perfect compromise for getting my legs out whilst not blinding anyone from the glare.

You can therefore imagine my delight at receiving some amazing polka dot sheer tights this week from Jonathan Aston's new Spring Summer 2013 range. The cartoony style of the big dots made me want to wear them with my Superman-blue skater skirt. So I did. AND I resisted any Clark Kent impulses to get changed in a phone box (not least because I haven't seen one in years).

Whilst I was gifted these beauties, I would definitely buy them myself as I've always been so impressed by the quality of Jonathan Aston tights. They have some of the most original designs that I've ever seen. Take a look at some of these attention-grabbers! I'm trying not to turn green with envy (or anger! Like the Hulk!) at the model's legs. Harumph.

Manicure Monday: Nail Art Fruit Decals

I spontaneously picked up some fruit design nail decorations by Nail Art in Topshop a few weeks ago and have been itching to try them out ever since. There are four supercute designs in the pack: oranges, apples, kiwis and cherries. A veritable fruit salad! I decided that a pale lemon yellow would be the perfect base colour and found it in Max Factor's Mellow Yellow.

Mellow Yellow is the first Max Factor nail polish that I've ever tried and I was a little disappointed by it. The brush is slim (I prefer wider brushes) and the polish applies a little streaky, although became opaque after two coats. Three coats would have been even better. It also started to chip within a few hours of application, which is NOT ON. Despite all this, the colour does look great for my purposes.

To apply the fruit decals I put a liberal coating of clear nail polish on the back of each one, then pressed it down on my nail with a cuticle stick, holding it in place until it stopped slipping. I then topped off each nail with a clear topcoat to keep everything in place. Describing this as fiddly is a complete understatement, it took blooming ages! The effect is kinda cool though. Behold:

Right hand
Both together
I'm really pleased with the overall effect of these decals, they look so cute and have brightened up my nails in a fun way. They're made of a Fimo-like material and are quite thick, but keep catching in my hair and on paper pages, amongst other things, so I'm skeptical as to how long they will stay attached. I'll keep you posted!

My Nails:

*I actually bought mine from Topshop for £2.50, so check in store too as I couldn't find them on their website.

EDIT: Four days passed before I lost my first kiwi whilst washing my hair. That's actually quite impressive. In fact, the decals had much more staying power than the nail polish!

BDG Slouch Stripe Sweater

Hey dudes. Everyone needs that perfect fall back item of clothing that just solves all comfort dilemmas, right? I found mine recently, in the shape of a great slouchy jumper and, as is often the case with these matters, I wasn't even looking for one. I like to think it found me (it jumpered out at me!)... although this wouldn't be strictly true as I was actually out shopping at the time and therefore in the zone for buying SOMETHING.

I've always been a huge fan of Urban Outfitters but the UK price tag is often a little higher than what I'm comfortable paying. However, I've come across some great items in there recently that weren't too crazily priced, and this BDG brand jumper is one of them. At first glance you may think it isn't anything special. You would be wrong! The width of the stripes, the fine knit, the oversized fit, the drop hem and especially the length are all perfect for me. I LOVE IT. It's the perfect addition to my predominantly casual wardrobe. Here's how I've been wearing it this week.

Here's a tip: if you're going on holiday to the USA, do make a beeline for Urban Outfitters over there as it works out quite a bit cheaper than here. I went nuts in there during my US road trip last autumn, it was amazing! However, I should probably point out that this jumper was bought in Birmingham (West Midlands, not Alabama) which doesn't sound anywhere near as glamourous.

An unfortunate feature of the fine knit: its tendency to pull. As shown here in Exhibit A.

Apologies for the indoor photos in this post. It was raining cats and dogs that particular day. I even managed to catch one:

In hindsight, she wasn't too impressed about it all:

Rate It or Hate It: Denim Pinafore

Every so often I become fixated with an item of clothing and am absolutely determined to make it work for me even if I suspect, deep down, that it may not totally suit me. I've spoken before about my love for all things pinafore related (here) and mentioned a few other such examples of one-piece wonderfulness that had caught my attention. One of them I REALLY could not get out of my head.

Step forward Topshop's lustworthy denim pinafore that I bought recently and absolutely adore. However, I suspect the feeling isn't mutual. I feel like it's a bit long on me and I should probably just wait and see if their Petite line will stock it so then I won't have this dilemma. But there's no guarantee it will come out in Petite! As such, I haven't been able to bring myself to remove the tags yet and fully commit to ownership. So I thought I would throw the question out there to you, my lovely readers, as to whether I should keep this pinafore or not. I ask you: should it stay or should it go??

Spring has sprung in Crouch End!
What should I do? Oh, the agony of choice...
The tag. Still attached. But for how long?

So, come on, help me out with this pinafore: winner or binner? YOU decide!

Make Up Monday: Topshop Lip Crayon in Powder Room

Recently I've been all about crayons when it comes to make up. I just can't get enough of them, particularly eye shadow and lip crayons. They're just so easy to use, what's not to love! So today I thought I'd show you my new favourite lip crayon by Topshop: Powder Room. This is a lovely matte rose pink that's just a shade or two darker than my natural lip colour, making it perfect for daytime.

As much as I love it, I do have two main gripes with this product. The first is that it's a little drying and can cling to any imperfections on the lip. However, that's easily counteracted with a good base of lip balm. Secondly, although this is a pencil, it's not possible to sharpen it and there isn't a huge amount of product in there. Having said that, at only £7 per crayon, I can live with that.

Stars n Stripes n Hearts n Spikes

I'm sure everyone now is sick to death of hearing about the whole Google Reader retirement hoo-ha, and the subsequent implications for Google Friend Connect (GFC). Only time will tell as to whether GFC will in fact be rendered useless, however there's no harm in me telling you how you can otherwise stay in touch with Woo Be Red, if you want to! Bloglovin seems the most popular platform at the moment, you can follow me here.

Back to clothes! Here now we have a lovely faded USA flag print tank top, which I bought with my upcoming beach holiday in mind. The recent ridiculously cold snap of weather we've had in the UK forced me to go delving into my wardrobe for ANYTHING warm and I was delighted to rediscover this fantastic superchunky cardigan. It has the cutest little hearts knitted all over it. I hunted this down on eBay a couple of years ago and can't believe I haven't resurrected it before now. It's so warm I can wear it as a jacket too. Which I did. I added my tartan scarf for the trip but forgot to get a picture of it. Tsk. Does that mean it didn't happen?

This is a typical weekend outfit for me - jeans, T-shirt and general slouchiness. I actually wore this last weekend when I was up in Staffordshire visiting my lovely mum for Mothers Day. We swiftly exhausted Stafford's limited shopping opportunities so took ourselves off to Birmingham for the day. The fruits of that labour will feature in future posts!

Babydoll Dress & Giveaway Winner

I've had these photos knocking about for a couple of weeks now, unsure as to whether to post them up as I really didn't like how I looked in them.  What a difference a fortnight makes! Or maybe I'm just feeling more 'glass half-full' today as they don't look too bad after all. My hair and squinty facial expression still bother me though... anyway, I'll let you be the judge.

I got this dress with a birthday gift I received last month: a Westfield gift card! Which, I have to say, is just about the best type of voucher out there. Seriously, if anyone ever wants to randomly give me a present (why wouldn't you, eh?), then you can't go wrong with this. It's amazing! Valid in all shops at Westfield shopping centres! I immediately legged it to Urban Outfitters in Stratford to get me a cool babydoll dress, and here it is:

In hindsight I'm not actually loving the cardigan and thick tights with this dress as I think it will be much better suited to a more summery look of bare legs and a biker jacket. That's something we can all look forward to, I'm sure you'll agree.

Spin spin sugar

So I finally finished compiling all the entries for my Benefit giveaway, input the info into random.org and am delighted to announce the winner as *drumroll*... Shelley Hazlewood! An email will be winging its way to you, Shelley - congratulations! Everyone else, you should also check out her blog The Shelley Diaries for fashion, beauty, lifestyle and much more besides.
